How a Tesla referral code works
A referral code for Tesla orders is an existing owner's link or code that you apply when you order a new Tesla. It can earn you a reward and the owner a credit.
Most problems come from one thing: applying it at the wrong time. This guide covers where the code goes and when it has to be there.

The short version
- Get the code first. Before you start configuring, have an owner's referral link or code ready.
- Open the referral link, then configure. Following the owner's link attaches the referral to your session. Build your car from that page.
- Check that it shows at checkout. Before paying the order fee, look for the referral line in the order summary. If it isn't there, stop and go back through the link.
- Place the order. The referral is locked to the order when it's placed.
- Take delivery. Rewards are confirmed after delivery, not at ordering. See when the reward arrives.
The one rule: the code has to be on the order when you place it. Don't rely on adding it later, even if someone says you can. Here's why.
Other things that catch people out
- Stay in one account. Order with the account you started under the referral link. Switching browsers, devices or accounts midway can drop it.
- Not every purchase qualifies. Eligible models, new versus used, and region all matter. Check the current list on the manufacturer's referral program page.
- Rewards change often. That's why this guide doesn't list amounts. The referral page shows what applies today.
