EV Referral GuideHow Tesla referral codes actually work

Can I add a Tesla referral code after I've ordered?

Usually not, and you shouldn't count on it. Tesla's program terms tie the referral to the order at the moment it's placed.

Some buyers have been told by staff that a code can be "added later". That often turns out to be wrong, and by then there's no one with authority to fix it.

If you haven't paid the order fee yet

Go back through the owner's referral link and start the configuration again. Confirm the referral line shows in the summary before you pay.

If you've just placed the order

  1. Ask right away, in writing, through your account or your advisor. Earlier is better, and well before delivery.
  2. Give the exact code and your order number. If they agree to add it, ask for written confirmation.
  3. Some buyers cancel and reorder through the referral link. Before doing that, check whether your order fee is refundable and whether your price or delivery date would change.

If the car's already delivered

A referral can't realistically be added after delivery. Keep the code for your next order, or share your own now that you're an owner.
