Tesla referral link or typed code: which should I use?
Use the link when you can. It's the method the program is built around, and it attaches the referral before you've typed anything.
A referral "code" is usually just the last part of the owner's referral link. The code is the bit after /referral/. Whether you can type it in separately depends on where and how you're ordering.
Why the link is the safer choice
- It works before you configure. Opening the link carries the referral into your session, so it's already there when you reach checkout.
- There's nothing to mistype. One wrong character in a typed code and the referral simply doesn't apply, often with no error.
- It shows you the current offer. The page the link opens lists what the referral is worth today.
If you'd rather type the code
Some order pages have a field for a referral code. If yours does:
- Copy the code instead of retyping it. Codes mix letters and numbers that are easy to confuse.
- Enter it before you pay the order fee, not after.
- Check that the referral line appears in the order summary. If it doesn't, go back and use the link instead.
Things that can drop a referral
- Opening the link on one device and ordering on another.
- Signing in to a different account partway through.
- Private or incognito windows that lose the session when closed.
Whichever way you apply it, the only check that matters is whether the referral shows in the summary before you place the order.
